How I built this site and why

As you can probably tell, this site is built 100% in WordPress. There are (currently) no plugins used, but there is some custom code for the portfolio and front pages. But even these pages are still WordPress Pages, just with special page templates. While I certainly could build and run the site “by hand,” changing the code base as I go to add new sections, features, etc., I chose to run the site with WordPress for the same reasons so many people run their blogs and editorial sites with it: because it’s easier!

"My God... it's full of boxes!"

"My God... it's full of boxes!"

The other reason I use WordPress on this site is because it’s obviously my specialty and I wanted to show you, my potential clients, what I can do with a blogging system that some have said is “too boxy.” Of course, building any website requires the use of “boxes.” Any site that doesn’t look boxy is employing simple tricks to make things seem more fluid, rounded and open. It is my hope that this site looks both traditional and balanced but with a little asymmetry thrown in to add some flare. The main menu is set right, the front page utilizes some fun roll-over effects and stacks the images and tag words side by side.

I chose to use very little color for two reasons: 1) My own personal aesthetic and preference for textures and gradients over color and, 2) in order to showcase more my structural design skills rather than my graphic design skills. What I bring to the table is a long professional history and real passion about how content is structured and navigated. You want your users to understand how your site works and make purchases or read your articles, right? I want you to be able to see, quickly, what I can do for your site and business right out the open. For the same reasons, I chose a nice big serif font to make it easier for you to read!

Of course, these are all reasons I decided to make my site this way. But I want to know what you think. Either about this site or websites in general. Tell me, do you like lots of colors, big fonts, small fonts, maybe you like so-called “boxy” sites? Add your thought in the comments below.
